Our Story

Our moms in Grade 1

Long before Chris or Sarah was in the picture, their grandmas were playing bridge together and their moms were going to school together! This picture is of Sarah’s mom Jane and Chris’ mom Peggy in Grade 1 together. Can you pick them out? 🙂

Our History with the Hall

Our reception is at a heritage hall in the South Surrey/White Rock area where Chris’ mom used to highland dance when she was a wee lass!

The first picture Chris took of Sarah

We met on December 30th, 2005 at a New Year’s Eve Eve party thrown by Dave MacKenzie, our good friend, and man of honour, at the legendary Oxford House. Chris took this picture in the midst of  pressuring Sarah to eat a bit of cookie dipped in dill cream cheese. It probably took Chris another 4 years to really appreciate that Sarah eating dairy and wheat was not in his best interest!

Finishing our time at UBC

When we met, we were both in the final year of our second degree programs at UBC. Chris was finishing up his thesis, and Sarah was studying way too much philosophy. One of the first trees we bonded over was the upside down tree at UBC. Sarah, being the type to attend orientation events, had learned about it when she started at UBC in 2000. Chris, being less inclined to participate, learned about the magical tree from Sarah. ♥

She’ll never live it down…

There was a group of us there. None of us can remember the context of the conversation. BUT no one forgets these words Sarah said.

The beginning of our Rad Pumpkins

In 2006 we decided to play a rather morbid joke on Sarah’s man of honour, Dave. He had come home after a summer away to find two crows dead in the fireplace of his house. He threw a Halloween party that year (again at the legendary Oxford House), so we decided to carve a pumpkin with two crows on it and set it up in his fireplace when he wasn’t looking.

Sarah starts snowboarding

Snowboarding has been a long-time passion for Chris, and when he took Sarah out for the first  time, he was nervous that she wouldn’t like it. As you can see from the pictures of our first trip, his fears were unfounded in the end.

From Fear to Fun

In the summer of 2007, Chris and Sarah took a trip out to Nelson to visit Chris’ mom. A little East of Nelson is a little artist town named Crawford Bay. We spent some time looking around the galleries, and Sarah discovered a particular affinity for a painting by artist Ted Wallace, titled “From Fear to Fun.”

Our First Photo Shoot

In the Spring of 2011, we jumped on the Groupon Photo Shoot bandwagon. We only got one image in the deal, but we kind of got two because after all these years, we are still on their website!

Alien Zombies

A few years ago we had to protect the world from an Alien Zombie invasion. Luckily we had some help from our friends.

Party 1-30!

In 2012, Sarah turned 30 and the Crescent beach house (Ivy Lodge) turned 100 – a party was in order! This video is a short promotional – and educational – clip that Sarah, Chris, and Dave made for the party we affectionately refer to as Party One-Thirty.

New York City!

The fall of 2012 found us in New York City to see a play written by Chris’ childhood friend Adam Bradley (and directed by our friend Noah Drew). The play, MiddleMan, was inspired by the writing in Chris’ thesis. It was very special for both of us to see it.

Participating in the the David Suzuki Foundation’s 30×30 Challenge in May 2013 was a life-changing experience for us. We (re)fell deeply in love with the woods.

Site A97

The 30×30 Challenge got us gung ho about getting out in the woods. This trip to site A97 was our first full-fledged camping trip. The first of many!

Site A63

Our camping trip to Golden Ears last August. The campfire ban put a damper on things, but friends lent us THE Yukon Legend (aka portable propane fire pit) and it saved the trip.

Party Co-op!

The tradition of the Party Co-op began in the Winter of 2014! This video was one of a few that we made to promote the event. We had a lot of fun riffing on “The More We Get Toque-gether” variations of this song, which is why we are all wearing toques! 🙂

Cheat Funeral

Chris’ car, nicknamed “The Cheat” after the Homestar Runner decal that came with it, died one day after nine years of faithful service. Using a medley from “How I Met Your Mother,” Chris and Sarah plan a funeral to honour the passing of the car. Dave is invited. He brings recording equipment. And the funeral becomes a music video shoot. The Cheat would have loved it.

We got engaged!

On Tuesday, January 14th, Sarah got home from work just before 10pm. She was talking to our friend Dave on the phone as she approached our apartment door. When she opened the door, saw the candles and the pictures and the writing, and heard Chris playing the guitar, she suddenly said, “I have to go!”

Chris nervously replied from the living room, “Are you talking to me?”

Luckily, she wasn’t. ♥
